What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are small snippets of text you add to the end of a URL to track where your website traffic comes from. When a user clicks your link, Google Analytics reads these parameters and attributes the session to the correct source, medium, and campaign — giving you accurate data on what’s driving results.

The 5 UTM Parameters Explained

Parameter Required Purpose Example
utm_source Yes Identifies which site or platform sent the traffic google, newsletter, facebook
utm_medium Yes Identifies the marketing channel type cpc, email, organic, social
utm_campaign Yes Identifies the specific campaign or promotion spring-sale, brand-awareness-q2
utm_term No Identifies the paid keyword (paid search) seo+services+orlando
utm_content No Differentiates between ads or links (A/B testing) banner-top, text-cta

UTM Tracking Best Practices

  • Always use lowercase: UTM parameters are case-sensitive. “Google” and “google” will appear as separate sources in your analytics. Our builder automatically lowercases values for you.
  • Use hyphens, not spaces: Replace spaces with hyphens (or our tool does it for you) to keep URLs clean and readable.
  • Be consistent with naming: Create a naming convention and stick to it. “facebook” and “fb” as sources will split your data.
  • Don’t use UTMs on internal links: UTM parameters reset the session source in Google Analytics. Only use them on external links pointing to your site.
  • Use a link shortener for sharing: Long UTM URLs can look intimidating. Use Bitly or a branded shortener for links shared on social media.

Why UTM Tracking Matters for Your Marketing

Without UTM tracking, Google Analytics can only tell you that traffic came from “direct” or a generic referral source. With properly tagged URLs, you know exactly which email campaign, which ad, which social post, and which affiliate drove a conversion — down to the individual link. That data is the foundation of smart marketing decisions: you double down on what works and stop wasting money on what doesn’t.
