Statistical significance tells you how confident you can be that the difference in conversion rates between Variant A and Variant B is real — not just random chance. A 95% confidence level means there is only a 5% probability the observed difference occurred by luck. At 99% confidence, that drops to 1%.
The industry standard is 95% confidence for most A/B tests. For high-stakes decisions — major redesigns, pricing changes, key landing page changes — aim for 99% confidence before acting. For low-risk iterations, 90% may be acceptable.
Run your test until you reach statistical significance — ideally for at least 1–2 full business cycles (typically 2–4 weeks minimum) even if you hit significance early. Stopping too soon, known as "peeking," inflates your false positive rate. As a rule: set your sample size goal before the test, then don't stop until you've hit it.
For most conversion rate tests, you need at least 100 conversions per variant to get reliable results — and more is always better. With very low-traffic pages (under 1,000 visitors/month), traditional A/B testing is difficult and you may need to run tests for months to reach significance.
